Dixon Officials Say Graduation Will Be Safe To Attend

Dixon police say the Sunday, May 20 high school graduation ceremonies "will be the safest place in the community."

That's a turn-around from Wednesday, when authorities say 19-year-old Matthew Milby arrived at Dixon High School during graduation practice and fired several shots inside the building. City Manager Danny Langloss commended the students on their bravery and reassured them that graduation will be safe to attend.

“There is nothing more important than creating a safe environment to celebrate the successes of these students," said Langloss. "We have created a great plan and we are working hard to reduce fear and anxiety."

Langloss, Police Chief Steve Howell, and Dixon Public School administrators worked together on the plan. It includes uniformed and plain clothes officers, no backpacks or large purses permitted, along with possible bag checks. Camera bags are allowed. Officials are asking guests to arrive early because of the added security.
